Age Gracefully: Top Anti-Ageing Treatments
March 13, 2025Is your skincare routine failing you? The secret to radiant, healthy skin is not about some expensive products but about understanding your skin type. Every skin type has specific needs and responds to treatments differently. This blog discusses the characteristics of different skin types and offers personalised skincare advice. Find the right techniques tailored to your skin’s specific requirements to finally achieve that clear, glowing complexion you’ve always dreamt of!
A] Understanding Oily Skin
Oily skin is the most common type of skin, where your sebaceous glands overproduce oil, causing shine and enlarged pores. This results in a greater chance of breakouts. The shine will often be most noticeable in your T-zone, which includes your forehead, nose, and chin, but pores will run small to medium. While generally moist, the skin might not feel excessively greasy.
However, the picture will be different if the oily skin is severe. Expect a much shinier appearance with noticeably larger pores and more frequent breakouts of blackheads and cystic acne. It may become oily shortly after cleaning, requiring intensive care. To prevent clogged pores, you must use mattifying products to control shine and regular exfoliation.
When to Seek a Dermatologist
If you’re experiencing persistent acne, cystic breakouts, or your skin feels excessively greasy despite trying different products, it’s time to consult a dermatologist. They can help identify the root cause of your oily skin and recommend effective treatments such as:
- Chemical Peels: Chemical peels help reduce oiliness by exfoliating the skin, removing dead cells and balancing sebum production. This treatment minimises shine, reduces pores and smooths out the skin over time.
- PRP Treatment: PRP therapy involves using your body’s platelets to stimulate healing and rejuvenation in the skin. It works on acne scars and helps promote general skin health, making it very beneficial for patients with severe oily skin who want to improve acne control and skin texture.
B] Understanding Dry Skin
Dry skin happens when your skin lacks sufficient moisture. This results in feelings of tightness, roughness, and flakiness. With mild dry skin, you might experience tightness even after cleansing, occasional flaking, and the occasional dry patch. These symptoms usually respond well to hydrating moisturisers containing ingredients like hyaluronic acid and glycerin.
Severely dry skin, however, is characterised by persistent tightness, dullness, scaling, and rough patches. It can even lead to redness, cracking, and irritation. The skin feels parched, and standard moisturisers prove ineffective. In these cases, thicker creams, oils like jojoba or shea butter, and overnight hydrating masks are necessary to restore moisture and repair the skin barrier.
When To See A Dermatologist
If your skin feels very dry, with painful cracks, swelling, and redness showing, then seek dermatological advice. A dermatologist will assist you in identifying the possible causes, such as eczema or psoriasis. Some of the suggestions are as follows:
- Skin Booster Treatment: Skin booster is an injection procedure that offers the deepest possible hydration of the skin and is recommended for parched skin.
- HydraFacial: HydraFacial deeply hydrates and nourishes dry skin, provides intense moisture and replenishes vital nutrients. This treatment boosts skin elasticity and gives soft, healthy, and plump-looking skin.
C] Understanding Combination Skin
You might be wondering what is a combination skin?. It means your face has both oily and dry areas. The T-zone (forehead, nose, and chin) is typically oily, while the cheeks are normal to dry. With mild combination skin, your T-zone is oily, and your cheeks are normal to dry. While this can create an imbalance, your skin generally feels well-balanced.
Meanwhile, severe combination skin exhibits significantly oily T-zones and dry, often flaky, cheeks. This requires a targeted approach, such as using oil-controlling mattifying products on the T-zone and emollients in the dry areas. Gentle exfoliation can help remove dry skin without irritating the oily areas.
When to See a Dermatologist
If the condition becomes severe and breakouts develop in the oily regions but dry areas are aggravated, then the time to consult a dermatologist has arrived. Treatments for such a skin type may include:
- Hydro dermabrasion: This treatment combines exfoliation with hydration, effectively addressing the needs of your skin’s oily and dry areas.

D] Understanding Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin, characterised by redness, irritation, and discomfort from certain ingredients or environmental factors, can range from mildly reactive to severely problematic. It was found that 27.9% of men and 36.7% of women reported having sensitive skin in India. Those with normal sensitive skin experience occasional redness or itching in response to harsh products or conditions, but it’s generally manageable.
Severe sensitive skin, however, presents constant redness, irritation, and itching, sometimes developing into rashes. Underlying conditions like rosacea, eczema, or contact dermatitis may be involved. So, it is advised to visit a dermatologist to understand your skin concerns better.
When to Consult a Dermatologist
If redness, irritation, or allergic reactions persist or over-the-counter products don’t seem to help, it’s time to see a dermatologist. They can help diagnose underlying conditions and recommend treatments such as:
- PRP Treatment: Platelet-rich plasma therapy can promote healing and rejuvenate sensitive skin by stimulating collagen production. It’s especially effective for soothing irritation and redness, making it ideal for sensitive skin.
- Mesolipolysis Treatment: It focuses on inflammation and redness, soothing sensitive skin and promoting healing, potentially reducing their appearance and restoring balance in sensitive areas.E] How to Find Your Skin Type
If you have wondered what my skin type is, you can perform multiple tests at home to help you determine it. Here are two popular methods you can use to discover your skin type.
1. The Watch-And-Wait Method
Also known as the bare-face method, it is a skin type test that helps you understand your skin type by observing how it behaves after cleansing. Wash your face with a gentle cleanser and pat it dry using a soft towel. Wait for 30 minutes and take a close look in the mirror. If your skin appears:
- Oily Skin: Shiny all over.
- Dry Skin: Flaky, rough or tight skin.
- Combination Skin: Oily T zone.
- Normal Skin: Hydrated and does not appear dry and oily.
2. The Blotting Sheet Method
When pressed to the skin, the blotting sheet absorbs oil, and you can use it to identify your skin type. To try this method, wash your face, pat it dry and wait for 30 mins. Then, press blotting sheets to various areas of your face and hold the sheets up to the light to see the oil markings. If the sheet:
- Oily Skin: Absorbs a lot of oil on the sheet.
- Dry Skin: Little to no oil on the sheet.
- Combination Skin: Oil collected only from the T zone on the sheet.
- Normal Skin: Minimal oil on the sheet.
